U) As we begin our conversation, Mayank, I’m itching to know: If you could dive into the world of any book or movie for a day, which one would you choose and why?

M) In my current pursuit of personal improvement, I am focused on exploring avenues for self-betterment. Therefore, I would choose a non-fiction work, such as the book “IKIGAI,” which depicts individuals from Japan and other regions leading longer lives due to their lifestyle choices. Being part of the narrative portrayed in this book would allow me to delve into the intricacies of such lifestyles and potentially glean valuable insights for my growth and well-being.

U) We’ve all experienced our fair share of ups and downs, Mayank, and I’m sure you’ve had some moments in your career that make you chuckle now. Care to share one of the most amusingly embarrassing incidents that occurred while you were filming a video?

M) Every time I shoot a video, I make tons of blunders, some too cringy to admit. But here’s a gem: I was filming at night, sick as a dog. I took some meds, felt better, and started recording. By the end, I was freezing and shivering in my room. With no heater, I grabbed the one thing giving off heat – my filming light! I wrapped it up like a burrito in my blanket. Talk about cuddling with hot stuff! 🌯😂

U) Tell me a bit about yourself, Mayank. What’s your background, and how did you get into the world of tech vlogging?

M) I hail from a lower middle-class background and received my education from government institutions. About a decade ago, during my college admission, I acquired my first smartphone using a scholarship. This sparked my interest in technology, leading me to delve into smartphone customization and watch tech YouTubers. Over time, this interest grew, prompting me to establish my channel in March 2020 with a friend. Our goal was to provide authentic and reliable tech information to our audience.

U) Did you always envision yourself becoming a YouTuber, or did it happen by chance?

M) Despite my aspirations to become a scientist, financial constraints and a lack of guidance led me to pursue commerce, a field in which I had little interest. Although I excelled academically, it failed to fulfill me. Discovering my passion for creating tech videos prompted me to start a YouTube channel to share my knowledge about gadgets. However, due to financial obligations, I had to maintain a full-time job alongside my channel.

U) In a sea of personal and tourism-based content, what inspired you to focus on tech videos, especially mobile phone reviews?

M) It all boils down to passion. Unlike other niches, smartphones are a subject I feel confident discussing from every angle. While I may not possess the most extensive knowledge, I am deeply passionate about them.

U) How do you manage to stay unbiased when reviewing tech products, particularly when we all have our favorite brands?

M) Reviewing a smartphone solely based on its brand is akin to selecting a leader solely based on their political party affiliation. Nowadays, influencers often prioritize brand deals over providing their viewers with genuine product evaluations. This is a trend I aim to avoid, even if I achieve significant success as a YouTuber. However, getting paid by a brand to promote a valuable product is completely fine.

U) With technology evolving rapidly, where do you see the mobile phone industry heading in the next few years?

M) In the past 4-5 years, smartphones have stagnated, with little innovation and strikingly similar designs and features across brands. Looking ahead, it’s likely this trend will persist, as flagship models from Samsung, Apple, and OnePlus have shown minimal changes in design and only incremental improvements in hardware and software features. Thus, the smartphone industry appears set to continue on its current trajectory for the next 3-4 years.

U) Despite challenges like inflation, how do you perceive the growth of tech businesses, especially in the current economic climate?

M) Tech businesses, like any other, go through ups and downs. However, they have a huge user base worldwide, and people are hooked on their products. We’ve seen them bounce back after COVID-19, thanks to smart management. It’s all about staying innovative and keeping up with what people want.

U) In your opinion, what are the essential qualities that make a phone stand out from the competition?

M) Certainly. A smartphone distinguishes itself when it meets the fundamental needs expected within its price range without unnecessary additions, and ensures a superior user experience. While design preferences vary and specifications may be similar across devices in a given category, the standout factor lies in consistently delivering on consumer expectations and providing a seamless user experience without resorting to gimmicks or unnecessary features.

U) China has become a leader in both phone and car manufacturing. What are your thoughts on this shift in the global market?

China’s influence in the smartphone and automotive industries presents both advantages and concerns. On the positive side, Chinese smartphone manufacturers offer a wide range of products across various price points, catering to different consumer preferences. This diversity enhances consumer choice and affordability. However, there’s a downside to this abundance, as it could lead to an overreliance on Chinese brands, raising concerns about data security and privacy breaches. Similarly, in the automotive sector, Chinese dominance may drive competition, resulting in better vehicles at competitive prices. Yet, this could also foster dependency on Chinese technology and raise questions about data usage and privacy. Thus, while Chinese dominance brings benefits such as affordability and innovation, it also necessitates caution regarding data security and technological independence.

U) Do you see yourself branching out into reviewing other tech products, like cars, or do you plan to stick with mobile phones?

M) Presently, my interest lies in reviewing and testing a broad spectrum of gadgets, including smartphones, laptops, TVs, speakers, headphones, and various other consumer electronics. (I mostly get smartphones, so you mainly see smartphone videos on the channel 😅). While my focus is not currently directed towards reviewing cars, I remain open to exploring this avenue in the future.

U) With the rise of AI, there’s speculation about its impact on human jobs. What are your thoughts on the future of AI and its potential effects on society?

M) I believe that AI will indeed impact certain jobs but won’t entirely replace human employees. Instead, it will serve to augment human capabilities by aiding in decision-making, automating tasks, and even generating simulated photos and videos. AI typically requires some level of human involvement to perform specific tasks effectively. However, the concern that often goes unaddressed is our growing dependency on AI. Already, we’re entrusting AI with simple tasks that traditionally relied on human cognitive abilities. (I’m also using ChatGPT to check if there are any grammatical mistakes in my answers 😂).

U) Mayank, I bet your YouTube adventure has been a rollercoaster of unforgettable moments! How about you spill the beans on one of those sidesplitting stories that never fail to crack you up? Maybe something like receiving a love letter written in blood from an overzealous fan or scoring some sneaky free tickets on a local train ride or an upgrade on Metro to the Gold Lounge?

M) I wish I had epic tales like those famous YouTubers with millions of subscribers or folks who’ve pulled off jaw-dropping stunts. But alas, for now, I’m not quite fitting into either of those molds.

U) Mayank, chatting with you is an absolute delight! But I’m dying to know, how did your YouTube journey kick off?

M) During the period following my graduation, which coincided with the COVID-19 lockdown, I found myself with ample time at home. Utilizing this opportunity, I decided to pursue an idea that had been brewing in my mind throughout my college years. I drafted a rough script for a video explaining “how 5G works,” recorded my voice using my budget Motorola phone, edited the video on the same device, and finally, published it.

U) And while we’re at it, any golden nuggets of wisdom you’d like to share with budding content creators?

M) Absolutely, growing on the platform requires a strategic approach. Here’s how I’d tackle each point:

1. Consistency is crucial for building a loyal audience, but it’s equally important to balance it with personal well-being. Giving yourself time to recharge ensures sustainable growth in the long run.

2. Engaging with your audience is key to understanding their preferences and expectations. By maintaining an open line of communication, you can tailor your content to meet their needs effectively.

3. Quality improvement should be a gradual process, prioritizing continuous growth over perfection. Striving for perfection can impede your content creation speed and limit the quantity of content you produce.

4. Steering clear of controversies is essential for maintaining the integrity and reputation of your channel. While controversial statements may attract temporary attention, they risk alienating your core audience and damaging your channel’s credibility in the long term.

U) That’s some solid advice for aspiring content creators, Mayank! Now, what’s on the horizon for your channel, XACT THE SAME?

M) My vision for the channel has always been continuous improvement. As you’re aware, my posting frequency is limited to 2-3 videos per month due to other commitments and occasional procrastination. However, I’m planning to introduce a Weekly Tech News series, in addition to the regular gadget reviews, explanations, or camera comparisons you’ve already seen on the channel. Currently, I’m suffering from fever and other health issues. After getting well, you may expect some changes on the channel, including setup and lighting.

U) Considering current global challenges like inflation, wars, and infrastructure concerns, where do you see the Indian and global tech industries heading?

M) In today’s business landscape, meeting consumer demands and needs is crucial for success. This requires effective strategies and management to innovate new products. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the tech industry has shown remarkable resilience and growth. Indian tech industries are expected to flourish moderately in 2024, benefiting from global trends in innovation. The integration of new technologies like artificial intelligence and smart robotics, alongside the contribution of talented employees with fresh ideas, drives this progress.

U) How do you think social media will continue to shape our lives, and what do you envision for its future?

M) In contemporary society, social media has entrenched itself as an integral aspect of our daily lives, and its influence is poised to persist, evolving into more immersive experiences such as the metaverse, which emulate real-world settings and offer customization options. While undoubtedly enjoyable, these platforms also harbor a darker side. It’s evident that many individuals are ensnared by social media addiction, unable to detach from their devices even during moments requiring focus and productivity. The allure of platforms like Instagram can be overpowering, leading to subconscious compulsions to scroll through endless reels, ultimately detracting from our ability to concentrate and maintain attention spans. It’s imperative that we exercise mindfulness and refrain from becoming beholden to these digital giants, reclaiming agency over our online habits, and prioritizing balanced engagement.

U) If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?

M) That’s an interesting one… I’d choose Rajneesh Osho, an Indian philosopher. It would be amazing to dive into a conversation about his philosophy and knowledge.

U) What’s the weirdest piece of tech you’ve ever come across, and did you end up liking it?

M) Luckily, I’ve never had the pleasure of trying out that product, but I stumbled upon it online. It’s a contraption for long-distance lovers—a pair of artificial lips! One person smooches the device, and the lips on the other end mimic the same movement, so you can feel your partner’s kiss from afar. The fact that this exists is mind-blowing! It makes you wonder about the crazy ways technology is changing the game in human relationships. 😂

U) Lastly, what message do you have for your viewers and those aspiring to start their own YouTube channels?

M) To all my viewers, I extend heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering love and support. Your continued encouragement means the world to me. To those with aspirations of launching their own YouTube channel, I urge you to start with whatever equipment you have at hand – your mobile phone is more than sufficient. If you have ideas brewing within you, don’t hesitate; to take that first step. Improvement comes with practice and time. Once you dive into the world of content creation, focus on enhancing your skills each day, gradually adding improvements.
